The Coppin family was originally from Halifax where James Coppin and his wife Catherine McPhee settled. David Coppin, the progenitor of the Prospect branch, was born in Halifax in 1842. During his 20's he served in the military and was involved in the Fenian Raids of 1867. He relocated to Prospect sometime in the late 1860s and over the next 50 years he would call the village home. David Coppin married Margaret Ross McGuire in 1864 and they would have 12 children - 10 girls and 2 boys - all of whom would settle in the village and most of whom would start families.
